Bearing Basics

A bearing is a mechanical component that reduces friction and supports moving parts, usually rotating shafts or axles. In navigation and mathematics, a bearing also refers to an angle that specifies a direction, measured clockwise from the north line using three digits. 
 
Mechanical Bearings
Mechanical bearings help machines run smoothly by transferring loads and allowing controlled movement. 
  • Plain bearings: Fixed surfaces with a lubricant layer; they have no moving parts.
  • Rolling-element bearings: Use balls or rollers to minimize contact friction.
  • Common uses: Automobiles, electric motors, and industrial SKF machinery.
 
Navigational Bearings
In geometry and travel, bearings describe exact directions on a map or compass. 
  • Three-figure rule: Always written with three digits, such as 045° or 090°.
  • Clockwise measurement: Always measured starting from due North in a clockwise turn.
