An air cylinder (or pneumatic cylinder) is a mechanical device that uses compressed air energy to create force and move a load in a back-and-forth linear motion.
How It Works
- Compressed Air: Air enters through a port in the end cap and pushes against an internal piston.
- Linear Motion: The moving piston pushes a connected metal rod outward to do work, such as lifting or pushing an object.
- Control: A directional valve controls which side of the piston receives air to extend or retract the rod.
Main Types
- Single-Acting Cylinders: Air pushes the piston in one direction only, and an internal spring or external load pushes it back.
- Double-Acting Cylinders: Air supplies force in both directions, using alternating ports to extend and retract the rod.
